“How can I become a better listener and improve my communication skills?”

MAGICAL HABIT

The blog underscores the importance of listening as a key habit for personal and professional success, citing insights from successful individuals like Bernard Baruch. It outlines five habits of great listeners, emphasizing mindfulness, open-mindedness, and comfort with discomfort. By honing the skill of active listening, individuals can enhance communication and learning, leading to greater understanding and connection.

The Habit of Listening to Music
“Most of the successful people I’ve known are the ones who do more listening than talking.”
—Bernard Baruch (American Philanthropist and Investor)
The habit of listening to others while they are speaking does make you a good listener. Listen intently and you may gather more information than you expect. Notice how intently mentors and therapist listen and then react.
Five Habits of Great Listeners

  1. Be Mindful: Listening is imperative to our success. Listen carefully to understand all that the speaker
speaks; don’t just hear what you want to hear.
  2. Take a pause before responding: – Do not be in any rush or hurry to respond or react once the speaker finishes the speech. Take a few moments to register it all, take a pause then respond or react.
  3. Have an open Mind: There are times when you already know or assume certain things before the
other person stops speaking. Be open to listen to the other person without judging or presuming.
  4. Comfortable with being uncomfortable: Sometimes, you are not always ready to listen or talk
over something that makes you uncomfortable.
One can experience a strong urge to cut the speaker in between the conversation and state one’s
point of disagreement or correcting someone who is giving out wrong information or half-baked information. Learn to be patient, listen to all of it, pause, and speak and highlight points.
A great listener: Be comfortable in your seat, mind your body language and make eye contact with the speaker if she or he looks at you whilst speaking. Giving occasional nods are a sign of encouragement to the speaker. I was not aware of this habit perhaps I learnt and
inculcated. During conversations I allowed the other person to speak first and I focussed on listening more. They say, ‘Listening is an art.’ and you definitely will learn a lot by listening.

If you get any chance to listen to a great speaker, you must focus on each statement, each word and their way of speaking. One must learn to be really attentive and focus on listening.
