The blog emphasizes the importance of developing a reading habit, highlighting how it enhances vocabulary, knowledge, and personal growth. It advises starting with easy-to-read books and gradually increasing reading time to build the habit. Additionally, it suggests keeping books visible and accessible to encourage consistent reading.
The ‘Book Reading’ Habit
“Reading a book gives us the habit of solitary reflection and enjoyment.”
—Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan {An Indian academic,
philosopher and second President of India}
I have been good in academics, but we never had any extra books to read, like there were no self-help books available back then, since I lived in a small town. It was only much later, when I enrolled in soft skill classes, to enhance my skills further, one of the trainers Dr. Nirali Yadav (Ph.D. in English Literature) motivated me to read more and helped me develop the habit of reading. Reading is absorbing information from the print and it also helps one build a good vocabulary and improves the language.
The first book which my trainer recommended was ‘The Compound Effect’ by Darren Hardy (American Author and Keynote Speaker). At first, I did face challenges while reading the book, it was difficult to comprehend, I kept reading more (finding meanings of certain words) and I can tell you, it is certainly an amazing book.
How can one develop the habit of reading?
Begin with any book which you may find easy to read. It will take just 5 Minutes to start with just a few initial pages and the next day you might read for 10 minutes, the following day another 20 minutes and gradually you will develop the ‘habit of reading’. You will also find yourself exploring many genres including the self-help genre. The more time you invest in reading the more you are open to receive knowledge from many authors and their experiences. The most eminent personalities in the world are the
most well-read people.
Where to keep the books?
I happened to attend one of the office meetings in the conference hall. The hall was well-equipped with everything in place. The meeting began at 10.00 am sharp followed by a short tea-break, the beverages, water bottles and snacks were arranged. I took my cup of tea and sipped on, only to be distracted by the biscuits kept on the counter. At first, I ignored, but gave in to the temptation and had a few of
those. Why did I do this? The biscuits were near, visible and accessible, I was naturally tempted!
The same goes with books too, whether you have books already or you bought a few more, place them in a way that they are visible to you and must remind you of reading a few pages at least.
Once you develop this habit of reading, you will know no bounds, read wherever you, whenever you can. Keep books in better places, they deserve respect and we must abide by it.
Some like to read the hard copies, even I, and some prefer pdf versions and even audio books, and that is
absolutely alright, as long as you are inclined towards knowing more and more the book withholds.
Don’t go on buying books with no intention of reading those; just to fill up a shelf. Your books are an investment.
“Books are your best friends,” buy those which you want to read to learn more, which have a grip, which are best sellers for a reason, which will intrigue your mind and heart. Self-Help and motivational books are very much in demand now, buy one for yourself and see how you transform. That will be the return of your investment and by this means you will be one well-read person yourself!
A sign to remember; if you are genuinely interested in reading, you will have those on the shelf at the earliest. Most importantly, go by the saying, “Do not judge a book by its cover.”
Inspired Action
Pick one book related to your domain / your working area/ your profession and the second book related to self-transformation. Read at-least 5 Mins every day to inculcate the reading habit I have picked up a habit to check books, referred by my mentors, co-workers, family and friends.
